Engine Grounds

Early 150 and 172 Cessna's terminated the battery ground braid at the nearest engine mount isolator bolt.  By the late 60's the battery ground was moved below the battery to a firewall bracket.  Item 10A is the photo to the left shows ground strap 0412007-8 installed between the engine and engine mount.  Relocating the battery ground and bypassing the engine mount isolator provided a much better ground path for the starter and alternator.  Owners of older models should seriously consider updating to the later model dedicated battery and engine grounds.

PPH engine ground is American made AA59569R30T0562 tin plated 7/8" wide 4 AWG copper braid with tin plated ferrules or M20659 Burndy YAV lugs with 3/16” hole and 5/16” hole.  Lentgh is approximately 7" center to center.

Airframe Wire

M22759/34

Single insulated standard wall M22759/16 and single insulated thin wall M22759/18 are typical specifications for avionics hookup wire.

M22759/34 wire is a dual wall Tefzel(ETFE) insulated tin plated copper better suited for airframe wire.  Cost difference for the added protection is minimal.  3" spools make convenient tool box storage for field repair.  Currently I have the two most common sizes, but more sizes will be available in the future.

Contact me with your make, model and serial number so we can determine correct wire size, length and lug.  Customer provided dimensions are  always helpful as factory schematics don't always provide length and lug size.  Beechcraft, Piper and other models available by request.

Solenoids

Lamar/Sky-Tec

As of 08/SEP/17 Hartzell Engine Technologies, parent of Sky-Tec, informed me of an inherited problem within Sky-Tec master solenoids.  They found the contactor alloy corrodes and will not carry a load. Voltmeter will indicate correct voltage across with no current output.  LAMAR has since purchased Sky-Tec PMA's and replaced the Sky-Tec master solenoid with LAMAR models.  According Jim Errington at LAMAR, Sky-Tec starter solenoids operate as designed and will continue being produced until original parts are depleted, then replaced with LAMAR models.

The easiest way to tell the difference between Sky-Tec and LAMAR is the number of 10-32 thread coil posts.  These are the small posts.  Sky-Tec solenoids have a single coil post and LAMAR two posts.

Jim at LAMAR offered a few tips for solenoid installation.  Mounting orientation can be any direction.  Coil energizing from any direction.  OVER torqueing will damage the internal nylon post insulator.  Use a wrench to back up the inside nut to prevent internal damage from post rotation during removal and installation of lugs.  Seal all seams and posts with an aviation grade RTV to prevent moisture contamination.  My TIPS page provides more information regarding solenoid installation
